OPPORTUNITIES

As Gollis University moved towards its commencement last year as Gollis College, there are numerous opportunities the University intends to capitalize on to ensure student success is realized and growth continues.

Following are some of the opportunities the College plans to pursue.

  The development of Somaliland Gollis CUniversity will be well positioned to help the Government of Somaliland achieve its national development priorities of Teacher Education, Criminology and Police Science, Civil Engineering, Information Technology, Business programs up to MBA level, and Learning and Skill Development, Economic Growth, Community Infrastructure, and Sustainability issues.

High school graduates The University's initial market research into the demand for a post-secondary institution indicates that the majority of high school graduates do not have access for higher education. Clearly there is a huge opportunity to address this issue and provide these students with the education to secure well paying jobs and contribute to the Advantage, progress and economic growth of Somaliland.

• Government, Business and industry partnerships Much of the future success for college programs will depend on the way learning can value add to some of the Central Government human resources e.g. Teacher and Law Enforcement Forces Training. The business and industry needs upgrading the skills for their workforce. This can occur through timely and appropriate credential-based education that meets the economic demand and the supply requirements of both the government and the private sector. Just as importantly, the University is committed to working with both government and the private sector to help develop specific customized training programs that add value to an existing workforce and create a competitive advantage.

• Applied research and innovation Gollis University is committed to being a catalyst for economic development in Somaliland. Subject to availability of funding, Gollis University is ready to undertake applied research activities in areas such as agriculture, environmental sciences, small businesses, and manufacturing-based technologies, low cost construction technologies.  

• Partnerships with International Colleges and Universities Gollis initiated academic associations and partnerships that are designed to strengthen the quality and relevancy of the curriculum and instruction with international higher education institutions. Perhaps no single area of development is more important to efforts aimed at reducing poverty and stimulating economic and social development in the region, especially in the fields necessary for continued growth in the region.

The students will:

  • Do twice as much homework as other post secondary school students in the area.

  • Waste far less time in television, movies, or in other unnecessary activities than day college/university students.

  • Achieve the highest proficiency levels in Math, Science, Computer Science, Writing and Reading in English and Somali language and literature, and moral and peace education

  • Be involved in afternoon physical education and team sports, co-curricular activities and outdoor education.

  • Receive individual attention from faculty and advisors who live in the campus.

  • Obtain scholarships directed to gifted students of nomadic and lower income families from all regions of Somaliland and resettling returnees.
